When to Visit Western Sichuan, Month by Month
The month-by-month table
| Month | What you get | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Mar–Apr | Bare valleys turning green; peach and pear blossom in Danba; few crowds | Cold nights, occasional late snow at 4,000 m passes |
| May–Jun | Fresh grasslands, azaleas at mid-altitude, stable road weather | Afternoon thunderstorms; rain gear on day hikes |
| Jul–Aug | Lush green plateau, wildflowers, warm Chengdu contrast | Peak rain: landslides can close roads for hours; busiest domestic season |
| Sep | Crisp air, first yellows, thinner crowds — an insider's pick | Nights drop below 10 °C in towns |
| Oct | The prime time: golden larches, snow-dusted peaks, post-monsoon clarity | Highest demand and prices; book weeks ahead |
| Nov | Late gold at lower valleys, first reliable snows up high | Some high passes and guesthouses close mid-month |
| Dec–Feb | Snow landscapes, frozen waterfalls, empty boardwalks | Severe cold (-10 to -20 °C nights), shorter park hours |
Why mid-October wins
The plateau's signature tree — Chinese larch — turns a luminous gold through the second half of October, and it happens to coincide with the end of the monsoon: pass roads reopen, skies clear, and snow returns to the 6,000-metre peaks for the postcard shot. Siguniang's Shuangqiao Valley, Yading's approach valleys and Jiuzhaigou's shorelines all peak in this window.
The trade-off is demand: the first week of October is China's Golden Week holiday — avoid it if you can — and the two weeks after are the busiest international window. Book hotels and tickets well ahead.
Shoulder-season logic
If you value quiet over colour, late May and September are the sweet spots: grasslands green and alive, roads dry, and room rates a third of October's. Winter is for photographers who want ice and solitude and can dress for -15 °C.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Western Sichuan?
Mid-October to early November for autumn gold and clear skies; late May and September for green grasslands with fewer crowds.
Can you visit in winter?
Yes — Jiuzhaigou, Siguniang and Hailuogou run all winter and snow scenery is superb — but expect -10 to -20 °C nights and some high-pass closures.
Is October crowded?
Golden Week (1–7 Oct) is extremely busy. The weeks after it are the best scenery-to-crowds ratio of the year — book early.
